a year after the lemonade stand, the arc lands on a name. butter, 黄油 — the client engine everything had been moving toward. one rust client, one client.* surface, everywhere. the laptop viewer the operator sits in, and every headless instance the fleet runs. same binary, same luau contract, different hats
one surface
the design is the answer to the patchwork i'd built up piece by piece: a viewer here, a bot runner there, a hub relaying between them. butter makes the client the unit and the control plane. the headed viewer is bot zero — the same engine and scripts, with a rendering pipeline attached for the operator. the fleet lives in-process, secondary avatars instanced inside one running client, sharing region state instead of fanning out over per-bot sockets
a script owns the fleet
fleet management is a script in the client, not a server feature. a luau script holds the whole fleet. a headless butter instance runs on the server, its own scripts on its own schedule, no controller attached. the ideas i kept circling — a chat that works beside the code, a bot you can direct, tools a model can call — all fold into one surface
what it replaces
botrunner and the per-bot services. the hub's many-bot relay. libremetaverse, dropped and archived for reference. python already retired. rust eats everything except luau, for a while — the doctrine, made concrete
where it came from
butter is not a plan i followed from the start. i spent a year just trying to get better at programming, and the pieces — the terminal games, the websocket board, the model that could see, the fork and the ukulele, the scriptable bot, the rust server — kept fitting together without my aiming at them. when the shape finally had a name, it was butter
黄油 is butter. the molt is done, and what's underneath is the whole year, gathered into one engine that wears every hat
