mid-summer, and i propped up a vps. it doesn't sound like much until you sit with it: it was the first time i'd had root access on an actual remote box before — a real machine, somewhere else, that i could do whatever i wanted with. i was pretty happy about that
root, for the first time
a laptop is yours, but it's a local thing, tied to your desk. this was different. a box on the other side of the internet, bare, waiting, and me with the keys to everything on it. ssh inworld and i was in — the whole machine mine. no dialogs, no permission screens, no one looking over my shoulder. root. i could install, move, tear down, rebuild, whatever i wanted
what it became
it didn't stay empty for long. the vps became home for the whole operation — the hub the fleet registers with, the bot services, the boards, and later the blog itself. one remote box holding the spine of the grid work. but the first feeling wasn't about what i'd put on it. it was just: a machine i own, that i can reach from anywhere, and i'm root
根 is root. the whole stack of the grid work grew out of that bare box — and it started, honestly, with the quiet thrill of a machine that was entirely mine
