by mid-august the system had a shape, and the shape had a direction i couldn't ignore. rust was the language i'd spent a year learning and it did the hard jobs well. lua ran inside the client, which was exactly where i'd put ukulele. the two had settled into a rhythm without me deciding it — the work was just showing me where things belonged
naming it
so i wrote it down as a rule, and named it 蜕变, tuì biàn — metamorphosis. a molt, not a costume swap. the system sheds the shell it outgrew and keeps the thing it became
two axes, slow and by contact: the c++ the client was born in, moving to rust; and the language of the work, moving toward mandarin. i gave the two big pieces names from the food register, as a joke that stayed: butter for the client, hotpot for the control plane. the whole migration had a name now, and a plan
why it felt right
i'd been doing all of this without a blueprint, and the doctrine was me admitting the direction i'd been following all along. rust by default, lua in the client. tools in rust, exposed as typed, self-describing things over mcp. it wasn't a new turn — it was the path the work had already taken, finally written down so it couldn't drift
蜕 is to molt. the shell came off, and what was underneath was the system i'd been building without quite saying it
